Looking for a homemade gift that is delicious, practical, and not loaded with sugar? Homemade nut butters are the answer!

Pretty much any nut can be made into a nut butter. I used peanuts, cashews, and pecans. But other options include hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts – and even seeds, like sunflower seeds, pepitas, and sesame seeds.

To Toast Or Not To Toast?

Toasting nuts before processing them in the food processor adds extra flavor to the final product. I would highly recommend this step (although it is not absolutely necessary.)

Customizing Your Nut Butter Flavors

To vary the flavor, you can add all sorts of other ingredients, like honey, maple syrup, sea salt, cinnamon, cocoa, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and powdered ginger. You can even add savory spices to nut butter.

Making Them Gift-Worthy

  • Package them in 4-ounce Mason jars
  • For a bigger gift, give a set of 3 nut butters, along with some jam and a decorative spreading knife
  • On a budget? Peanut butter is the cheapest option.

Homemade Nut Butters

Total Time: 25 min

To toast nuts: Preheat oven to 350F. Place nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes. Remove from oven, stir nuts, and return to oven for 3 minutes. Check to see if the nuts are toasted. If not, stir, and return to oven for 2 more minutes. Keep an eye on the nuts, as they can quickly burn. Be sure to cool nuts completely before pureeing.

Ingredients:

Peanut Butter:
2 cups toasted peanuts
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon honey

Cashew Butter:
2 cups toasted cashes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon maple syrup

Pecan Butter:
2 cups toasted pecans
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

Place nuts in a food processor. Process for several minutes, scraping down sides in between. It may take 5 minutes or more to make a smooth nut butter. Once you're happy with the consistency, add the salt, sweetener, and other desired add-ins. Place nut butter in a glass jar, and keep refrigerated for up to 1 month.
